Summer in Andalusia

17 May 2016

Summer is around the corner and it’s time to start planning your summer holidays. There’s many reasons why Andalusia is an attractive destination, many of which have to do with the SUN! However, it do gets hot here in summer, so a little help in building your itinerary is going to optimize your trip A LOT!  To make most out of your travels through our beautiful region in the south of Spain, we listed some beaches, activities and festivals you cannot miss this summer.

Follow the bike routes in Andalusia

Although not being that well known, a cool way of exploring Andalusia’s nature is by following the Via Verde’s. Go off the beaten path and explore the countryside by following Greenways that once used to be regional railway routes. In the sixties, the government made a lot of changes in the train net, which meant a lot of train rails went unused. Since the 90’s the government has been turning these into scenic bike- and hiking routes, of which 23 are located in Andalusia. Moreover, some of the old train stations now got turned into bars and restaurants. A very unique way to discover the region!

Less of a nature person? If you find yourself in Sevilla this summer, wanting to escape the city heath for a day, a day trip to Cadiz is the perfect escape. City lovers will be amazed by what Cadiz has to offer. An amazing city with a rich history, which also happens to be at the seaside, it’s the best of both worlds! We offer the full package with your own guide showing you all the best Cadiz has to offer, check it out here. And yes, OF COURSE some time on the beach is an option!

Cool off in Sierra Nevada

The temperatures in this mountain resort are very different than in the rest of Andalusia with an average of 20 degrees Celsius Sierra Nevada is the perfect scenery for a family day filled with outdoor activities. Think zip-lining, climbing, children parks, … Sierra Nevada has many options for a day the whole family can enjoy.

While you’re there, don’t forget to visit to visit the Alhambra in Granada, very often featured as one of the most beautiful castles in the world.

Join the celebrations in fishing villages

Ferias and events are all around in summer, but unique for the summertime is patron saints of everything concerning fishing getting honoured. Small fisher towns hold processions, fireworks, bonfires, and many more old traditions are practiced during these events. The one thing all these festivals have in common, is the lively Spanish atmosphere, the eating, the dancing and of course the drinking. Be part of a once in a lifetime experience!

Hit the beach

Of course the main thing many of us want when we think about summer, is some time spent at the beach with a cocktail and a good book in our hands. Andalusia has an endless number of amazing beaches, but some might get a little too crowded over summertime. Some of our favourite spots are:

  • Bolonia on the Costa de Luz is a bit more difficult to reach than the other beaches in the area, but it’s definitely worth it. The beach is split up in 3 parts, splitting up the surfers from the families that want to have a swim. While you’re there, make sure to visit the roman ruins after your beach day
  • Zahara de las Atunes, another one on the Costa de La Luz, is the best place to be amongst locals. Tired of tourists? This is your go-to beach. It’s a spacious beach that doesn’t get too crowded, and on top of that serves fresh tuna in the beach bars around
  • Nerja, costa del sol. Touristy? Yes, worth it? Definitely! Nerja is a 40 minute drive from Malaga and features a series of smaller beaches, hidden between cliffs. It’s the perfect place to go paddle boarding and swim into caves!
  • Playa de los muertos, Cabo de Gata, Almeria. Located in a national park this beach is an all too charming spot, think coral reefs, cliffs and ruined castles. Definitely a spot for the one that looks for a bit more in a beach than sand!

This is only a small selection of what Andalusia has to offer in summertime, but it will already help you on your way. For bike rental an amazing tours in our lovely region, check out our website atdspain.com
