Some of you might have heard of the Andalusian horse breed. It is also known as the PRE, the Pure Spanish Horse. This centuries old breed derives from the area around Sevilla in Andalusia. Because the Moors ruled the south of Spain from the 8th until the 13th century, this breed has both Spanish and Arabian roots. In 1570 king Felipe II, a lover of horses, founded the Royal Stables in Córdoba. He set out to create and breed the greatest horse to ever exist. Since around this time, the Andalusian horse was recognised as an individual breed, and it was known as the ‘royal horse of Europe’. These luxurious stallions were given to the Spanish royals and given as diplomatic ‘gifts’ to the French and English court as well.
Nowadays you can find this beautiful horse breed all over the world. But the best place to see this horse in action is close to his roots, in Córdoba. The Espectáculo Ecuestre Pasion y Duende del Caballo Andaluz in the monumental Royal Stables is a must-see if you are in Cordoba. This show lasts more or less 70 minutes, and demonstrates a perfect combination of elements from classical and Andalusian horsemanship. Different disciplines will pass the stage. Vaqueros (Andalusian cowboys), beautiful women in Flamenco dresses dancing with the horses, in-hand work with the rider standing next to the horse… in short, this show has it all.
Ticket prices are €15 for adults and €10 for children (aged 3-12). There is also a limited amount of premium tickets available (€20 each), with which you will have reserved seating in the best location, you’ll skip the queue and you’ll be allowed in before the show to walk around ‘backstage’ through the stables and you will be able to meet the horses up close and personal before the show. If you’re a horse lover or simply curious of what the stables look like? Then I would definitely recommend this!
