April's fairs and festivals

16 Mar 2016

While the preperations for Semana Santa are still in full force, we are already thinking ahead for the people visiting Andalusia in April. Even though Semana Santa is the most important week of the year for catholic Andalusia, the most festive month of the year is definitely April. In April the summer fairs start in Andalusia with ‘Feria de Abril’ or the April Fairs.

When traveling through Andalusia during this month, you are likely to encounter many processions and celebrations, but the highlight of the month is without a doubt Feria de Sevilla!

This year the Feria de Sevilla will take place from April 12-17th, two weeks after Semana Santa. Expect a week of dancing, eating and drinking until the early hours. You will get to witness what the Andalusian culture is all about, prepare yourself for horses, carriages, flamenco and daily bullfights. To top it off, every Sevilliana wears a beautiful flamenco dress and a flower in her hair while men roam the streets in well-tailored suits. It’s an amazing experience to be part of, you won’t know where to look!

If you don’t have accommodation in Sevilla, we are sorry to tell you that finding a place to stay will be a difficult task, but hey, persistence is key!

Even though we started our calendar off with the highlight of the month, or better said, the year, Feria de Sevilla is not the only thing going on in April. Other parts of Andalusia are feeling festive that month too.

Golf: Spanish open, Valderrama Golf Club in Cadiz
From 14 until 17 April the Spanish Open takes place in Cadiz. Andalusia is known for being a paradise for golfers, so it won’t come as a surprise that you can find this international tournament in our region. Many of the world’s best golfers gather during those days for this championship. Golf-lovers, don’t miss this one!

Romeria de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, Andújar, Jaén.
On April 24 the people of Andújar get together on the highest mountain top of Sierra Morena, where the sanctuary of the honoured Virgen of the Cabeza lies. During the night time, there is dancing and singing in traditional clothing. The next day a procession takes place to close the fiestas, carrying the image of the Virgin back to Andújar.

Spanish grand prix, Jerez de la Frontera
Do you love speed? Well then this one is for you? From 22 until 24 April, Jerez de la Frontera is all about motorcycle sport. On Friday and Saturday you can witness the training sessions and classifying stages, preparing for the big competition on Sunday.

Montilla-Moriles wine tasting, Córdoba.
The event-calendar in April is as diverse as it can get, offering enough different events for everyone to find ‘its cup of tea’. Or should I say its glass of wine? From 20 until 24 April Cordóba turns into a Walhalla for the bon vivant, offering a wine tasting event in the streets of the city. Wineries from all over the region sample their Montilla-Moriles wine served with tapas during these days accompanied with open air concerts. Seems to be a perfect getaway from our daily lives.

Star spotting in Malaga: Spanish film festival
From 22 April until 1 May the national film industry gathers in Malaga for the screening of never-before seen films and documentaries. A fan of Spanish productions? This might be the perfect time to meet your favourite actors in real life!

Crosses of May, Cordoba
It’s hard to imagine Andalusia without religion, many of the Andalusian festivities are tied to it. This one is no different. From 27 April until May 1 the city is decorated with flower-decorated crosses, competing in a competition organized and judged by the city council. And of course, it would not be a real Andalusian event if at night there wouldn’t be music and dancing, another great festival by and for the people you cannot miss!

World people’s fair, Fuengirola, Malaga
Do you love culture in all its aspects? Food, art, traditions? Then this one is for you! From April 28 until May 2 Fuengirola in the province of Malaga hosts this amazing fair that gathers people and cultures from all over the world. The city is a melting pot of more than 100 different nationalities, it would be a shame not to celebrate it. Expect gastronomy, markets, exhibitions, performances and a lot more in the laidback environment of the Costa Del Sol.

Want to discover the city of Malaga too, or are you more of a nature lover? We offer both a city tour and a mountain bike tour for those who want to make most of their trip. Find out more on our website.

Horse fair, Jerez de la Frontera
This last event mainly takes place in the first week of May, but it already starts off on the 30th of April. Andalusia is known for its horses and this week is all about celebrating them and the riding culture around it. A week full of competition, shows and streets filled with horses, carriages and floral decoration. Moreover, the programming is not only all about horses, there’s also bullfights, dance competitions and fireworks to top off this joyful week.

As you can see, April is not a quiet month in Andalusia. But then again, when is it ever? So get excited and pack your bags. Need any help planning your trip? Feel free to contact us at any time!
