Since the 19th century, football is being played by Spaniards. It was introduced by the British workers and sailors. The first club was created in 1889: Recreativo Huelva. Quickly followed by Athletic de Bilbao and FC Barcelona.
Copa Macaya was first Catalan competition. This was an annual football competition between Catalan clubs. Afterwards, in 1902, the Copa del Rey was established, which was a competition for clubs from all over Spain. The first Spanish competition was created a few years later. This was called the Primera División.
The first European competitions were held in 1955. Since then, the Spaniards only got better and better. The first time in history that the national team won the European Championship, was in 1964.
Thanks to the European Championship in 1984, the national team was able to grow and create more teams. Furthermore they are also very proud of the UEFA Champions Leage of 2000. Real Madrid and Valencia CF played this final match.
Nowadays it is still the most popular sport to practice in the country. There are over a thousand clubs where they play in competition.
Sevilla has two football clubs: Real Betis Balompie and Sevilla FC. The players of Sevilla FC are playing in the red and white colours. The stadium of Sevilla is the Estadio Sanchez Pijuan. This one is located in Nervión. This is about a 10 minute drive from the city center. It is also easily reachable by metro or by bus. The football stadium of Sevilla FC can be found in Calle Sevilla Fútbol Club, s/n, 41005 Sevilla.
This football club was founded by some students of the Polytechnic. Thanks to Alfonso the 13th, they received the Real, which can nowadays still be found in the logo of the club. They also have their own football stadium, which can be found in the Heliopolis district, which is situated in the south of the centre of Seville. The club of Real Betis Balompie uses the colours of Andalucía in their outfits. If you are curious to watch a match, or you are interested visiting the stadium, this one can be found in Av de Heliópolis, s/n, 41012 Sevilla.
The ‘clash’ between these two clubs has been created in 1915. Seville won more or less everything and Betis lost a second time during the first Copa Andalucia. Since then they see each other as competitors.
