To study or do an internship abroad is always a challenge. However, living as an intern in a city you haven’t been before is even more challenging. So that’s what I did and I couldn’t have been more excited for anything ever.
My name is Mirte and I always knew that I wanted to do my internship relating to my education Tourism and Leisure Management in another country (preferably somewhere warm as I get cold very easily). Why? Because it’s a unique experience that broadens your knowledge about people, cultures, countries… and it teaches you so much more, as well about yourself. In July 2015 I went to Atlanta situated in the United States of America for a language exchange. I lived in this city for a month with a host family and three other exchange students: a Spaniard, a Colombian and a French-speaking Swiss. The whole experience was incredible. I met a lot of people who I can now call my foreign friends. One of them lives in Madrid actually. This experience made me less prejudiced and more open-minded.
When I came here by plane, I discovered all the highlights of the city like Metropol Parasol, Plaza de España, Plaza Nueva, the shopping streets (Calle Sierpes, Calle Tetuán and Calle Cuna), the Cathedral, Torre del Oro… These are really beautiful but honestly, I wanted to know what the city really is about. What is Sevillian/Spanish food like, who lives here, what is life like in this city?
Later I got surrounded by some very kind roommates. I live in an apartment together with four other people: two Spaniards, one German and one Italian. They are all very different but they are all enjoying this amazing city. If I want to talk or go out, I can do that with them or of course with the other interns who take me to some amazing places like tapas bars where only locals come. And by the way: I think I cannot live without Spanish tapas anymore…
Speaking about food, I am amazed by the local food. Spanish people don’t eat much international food, they stick with their own national dishes. I already tried 100 Montaditos, Ibérico ham, Patatas bravas and Bocadillos. Therefore I have still to taste some specialties like Croquetas, Gazpacho, Crema Catalana, Tortilla de patatas, Pan con tomate and of course Churros con chocolate (churros with chocolate).
What I am also looking forward to, besides eating a lot of Spanish food, are the upcoming events like carnival, Semana Santa and Feria de Abril. Someone already told me where the Feria de Abril mainly will take place. There normally won’t be many tourists because it’s outside the center of Sevilla. It sounds so much fun to be there and celebrate. And the morning after the celebrations, all Sevillians traditionally eat Churros con chocolate as breakfast. I am totally in for that too!
This city keeps inspiring me and that’s why I fell in love with Sevilla. It’s just a feeling that each day I am more and more impressed by the city. And I think that will never get old. Living in a city is something I always wanted to do because I am small town girl.
On my first day of work I received a warm welcome and immediately had a good first impression of Andalucía Tours and Discovery. I am sure we’ll have a lot of fun and am excited to continue my journey at this company and get to know literally EVERY small detail about Sevilla!
