Where are the nuns?

29 Oct 2017

At the beautiful square, Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, there is a lot to see. The one thing that stands out and screams for your attention is the enormous cathedral with its high Giralda tower. Next to that you have the M. Gago street which is very famous for its tapas and other food, with a lot of different restaurants and nice places to eat. But what we are going to tell you about today is the convent at the square, called Agustinas Convento de la Encarnación. A lot people don’t know about its existence, that’s why we want to tell you everything about it you should know!

Agustinas Convento de la Encarnación is not a normal convent, it is very special and unordinary from others. You want to know why? I will tell you right know! The fact is that the nuns that are inside this convent are completely shielded from the outside world. But how you ask? The nuns can’t go outside, can’t use a television, telephone, radio or read newspaper. So they don’t have any contact with everything that’s happenings outside. They do have other nuns that but their groceries but they really don’t leave their building themselves. Inside the convent live around 20 nuns, there use to live more nuns but unfortunately they passed away. They chose for this way of living their selves, just to have a full commitment to god and to pray as good and much as possible in total peace. And one thing is for sure, the definitely have peace inside.

But can’t they see any other people besides the other nuns? Well luckily for them they can. They are allowed to have visitors, 3 times a month. But even then there is a nun that guards the visitors to the inside and from the inside back to the outside when they leave. This is of course to make sure that there is no information from the outside coming into the inside of the convent.

For me personally it would be a very difficult way of living because I like talking, my telephone and other technology way too much but for these nuns it is their own choice as well. They swore an oat and they chose these lives and this way of living their selves. The nuns also don't get paid but everything that they need for living has been taking care off. I don’t know if they are still happy with their choice years back but I sure hope for them they do and I hope they can live and pray in full calmness.
