Torre Sevilla

23 Sep 2019

It rises above all buildings in Andalusia: red, modern and shaped like a lipstick...the Torre Sevilla! In this blog, you will learn more about this tremendous building.

After seven years of hard work, the Torre Sevilla was finished in 2015. With a height of 180 meters, the “Lipstick” tower is the highest building in Andalusia. You can find it in the neighborhood Triana, the former gypsy neighborhood of the city.

The tower was designed by Cesar Pelli, a famous American-Argentinian who used to be the dean of the architecture department at Yale. The building is used for different functions. Inside the building, you will find the Caixa bank, conference rooms, a hotel, and a restaurant. If you’d like to have a nice view, you can go in and watch Seville from above! However, be aware of the fact that it may be closed, due to conferences and other activities.

For years, the Torre Sevilla brought up a lot of discussions. People thought it wasn’t right that the tower was higher than the Giralda Tower. Through the years, an unwritten rule arose that buildings couldn’t be higher than the Giralda Tower. Until the Torre Sevilla was built, Seville had an environment of low-rise buildings (except from the Giralda tower of course). Besides, people were afraid that UNESCO would remove Seville from the World Heritage list, where it was on since 1987. It didn’t come that far, but there was a moment that UNESCO was thinking about putting Seville on the Endangered Heritage list. The mayor of the city, Juan Ignacio Zoido, was able to prevent that from happening by promising that the city would never again build skyscrapers in areas where they could influence the historical heritage.

For the shopaholics among us, the Torre Sevilla is an interesting place to be, because there is a super modern shopping mall right next to the tower. Here you can find a Primark, Hunkemöller, shoe stores and of course enough restaurants when you need a break!

From now on, if you see a lipstick shaped on the horizon, you know what building it is!
