Are you spending Christmas here in the beautiful city of Seville? Christmas here will be probably different than you are used to at home. Seville has beautiful markets and great activities around Christmas that we share with you in this article. Bring your Christmas sweater, gifts for your loved ones and enjoy your stay here in Seville!
Christmas markets
What is Christmas without visiting a Christmas market? Currently, there is a very interesting market in Seville until the 23rd of December called the ‘Feria de los Belenes’, where you can find all items to create a nativity scene! This market is next to the Cathedral of Seville and the Archivo de Indias. Take your time and check out all the beautiful detailed decorations that are also great souvenirs!
Between the 6th of December and the 6th of January, there is also the annual Nervion’s Christmas market that is visited by thousands of people. The market shows beautiful decorated wooden stalls, as well as permanent exhibitions. All decorations are handmade, so every piece is unique! This market takes place along the Avenida Luis de Morales, near the Nervion Plaza shopping center.
In front of the city hall, at Plaza Nueva, there will be another Christmas market called the ‘Navideño Mercado de Artesanía de Sevilla’. It is a market dedicated to craftsmanship typical of Sevilla. The plaza Nueva will be filled with wooden stalls where artisans and local merchants sell pottery, jewelry, leather and glass, wooden toys, clothes and other products of the region Andalusia.
Traditions
One of the Spanish traditions during Christmas is buying lottery tickets! The huge jackpot is called ‘El Gordo’. It is a huge happening in Spain and tickets are available almost anywhere. Maybe you will come back home with the jackpot in your pocket... One of the places where you can buy the lottery tickets is ‘El Gato Negro’ (the black cat), which you will find across the Cathedral at Avenida de la Constitucíon. They believe that this black cat that you will see on the wall, will bring you luck.
Even though the weather in Seville is pleasant around Christmas, there is an ice rink next to Jardines del Prado de San Sebastian. Last year you paid €7 for adults and €5 for kids for 45 minutes. Enjoy the winter-fun at the ice rink here!
Christmas dinner
Looking to go out for dinner at Christmas? We recommend searching for a restaurant and book in advance as soon as possible. On Christmas evening, the 24th, it is Nochebuena, which means not many restaurants will be opened. People stay at home that night to watch the speech of the king. Some recommendations for restaurants for Christmas are La Resolana, La casa del Tesorero, Restaurante La Laguna and La Raza. Of course, since Seville has a lot of bars and restaurants, you are completely free to choose what you’d like!
Last but not least, since the weather is pleasant in Seville around Christmas, it is also the perfect time to join us on a guided biketour through the city. On the 25th of December, we will be closed, but on the other days, our guides are ready to show you the highlights of the city!
¡Feliz Navidad!
