Best Churches (Sevilla) To See In Summer 2017

06 Mar 2017

The Spanish people are known to be very religious. This stereotype dates back from the 15th century when to the last Islamic state fell in Iberia at Granada. Thus ending the Reconquista, or the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula that spanned 700 years. The Spanish Inquisition, the backdrop of the Assassin’s Creed movie, is equally responsible for the more than 115 churches in Sevilla and the very high Catholique population.

This is good news. You could easily spend a day looking for churches to visit. Whether for spiritual/religious reasons or a love of historic architecture, these beautiful buildings are definitely worth seeing.

Here’s a list of the churches you should visit:

#5: Iglesia de San Pedro

The Church of Saint Peter stands proud over the Plaza de San Pedro in the centre of Sevilla. It’s the main church of the San Pedro and San Juan parishes. The reason is this church ends up is the Gothic - Mudejar it was built in, its magnificent altar piece and the Moorish. The Iglesia de San Pedro was originally built as a mosque in the 1300s.

October - March: 7:00-18:30. April - September: 7:00-19:00.

#4: Santa María La Blanca

Santa María La Blanca interiorThe Santa María La Blanca, or Saint Mary the White, is one of many repurposed mosques and synagogues. Underneath the simple exterior lies one pearl of the Andalucian Baroque. It’s hard to describe the feeling when you first step in, it’s a good mix between humbling and awe. The extensive detail in the decoration is overwhelming. One could spend days in here and still discover new things.

Monday-Saturday: 10.00-13.00h /18.00-20.30 h.
During the mass - Sunday, at 11.00 and 19.30 h. (not visiting hours)

This church dates back to 1276, officially making it the oldest ( purpose built) church in Seville. It was built by King Alfonso X who then dedicated to Santa Ana, the mother of Virgin Mary, as she cured him from eye disease. Many Spanish couples decide to marry here - leading to a long waiting list. When you walk around the church, you start to understand why the wait is worth it.

Our Daily Bike Tours stops here.

Everyday from 10.30 to 13.00 and 18.30 to 21.30.

#2: Iglesia del Salvador

Iglesia del SalvadorThe runner-up is the iglesia colegial del Divino Salvador, the collegiate church of the Holy Savior, is the second biggest church after our number 1 pick. This building wears its history on its sleeve as you can see Roman, Visigoth as Islamic elements in its design. The inner courtyard, or patio, is a beautiful example of that.
The Plaza del Salvador is a good venue to eat tapas and admire the Salvador church from a distance.

Open from Mon - Sat from 11.00 to 17.30.Sun from 15.00 to 19.00.

#1: Catedral de Santa María de la Sede de Sevilla

A picture of the replica of the statue on top of the Giralda in front of the entrance of the Cathedral of Sevilla. As if there was any doubt, the cathedral, of course, is our top pick for must see church for the summer of 2017. Not only is it the third biggest cathedral in the world and the biggest gothic church in the world, it was also the featured in the blockbuster movie Assassin's Creed in 2016 in a scene regarding the resting place of Christopher Columbus. The cathedral itself is still being used if you want to go join a mass there. If you prefer to visit the cathedral itself and its tower, La Giralda, you can do that at the south entrance.
It’s definitely worth the small entrance fee as the cathedral is beautiful beyond words.

If you don’t like waiting in line, there’s a little secret so you don’t have to. Go visit it when it’s noon (around 13.30), the line is nearly non-existing.

Open 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. (summer from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.)
