Alfonso XIII Hotel

16 Sep 2019

During our daily bike tour, where we show the highlights of the beautiful city of Seville, we stop at an astonishing building in the center of the lively city: Alfonso XIII Hotel. The building, named after the ruling king that opened the hotel in 1929, is probably one of the most breathtaking things you will see during your stay in Seville and definitely something you should not skip.

History
The hotel is an iconic building, designed for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition to house international visitors and later used again for another Exhibition in 1992. The architect behind this hotel in complete neo-Mudejar style, is José Espiau y Muñoz, the brother-in-law of the well-known Anibal González. He won the competition that was held to select an architect to design the hotel. The hotel was built between 1916 and 1928 and has been reopened after a thorough renovation in 2012. When you look at the hotel, you will see that José was sticking to the regional tradition inspired by Arab architecture. From the lobby to the inner courtyard, the hotel is reflecting the native Andalusian design and Sevillian style. This is even visible in the outdoor swimming pool and gardens where guests relax and refresh under the Spanish sun.

Important guests
The hotel is conceived to be the grandest hotel in Europe and has seen some well-known people from all over the world. It has hosted Barack Obama, as well as the cast of Game of Thrones, Angelina Jolie and many more celebrities and royal dignitaries. What makes the hotel even more outstanding is that all 147 suites and rooms are unique and they all represent the charm of the city of Sevilla. Today, the hotel continues to draw international celebrities who appreciate the location that fuses history, great service, and beautiful architecture.

Visiting the hotel
When visiting Sevilla, make sure you stop by the hotel to take some pictures. The hotel is close to the Cathedral and Real Alcázar and is the perfect place to take a break. It is no problem to go inside and enjoy the sight of the richly decorated interior with azulejos, the ceramic tiles. If you have time, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea here to get the full experience. And who knows, maybe you will spot a celebrity that is staying in the hotel!
