Things to know about the Fair

Now Semana Santa is over, we have the Feria de Abril or Seville April Fair as we foreigners tend to call it. Officially the Fair starts at midnight on the Monday which falls two weeks after Semana Santa and ending the following Sunday at midnight with a big and spectacular firework.

Are you in Seville during the Fair? Well, here are some facts and tips for you.

Some facts:

yesDid you know that the origins of the fair can be traced back to a cattle fair? Well, it took place on the grounds of the Prado de Sebastian in 1847. The Sevillians have never been afraid of a good party!

laughFun to know, the Feria de Abril is the biggest annual fiesta in Andalusia. Maria Luisa park in Barrio de los Remedios is the fairground. This fairground is known as ‘Real de la Feria’. For one week, this fairground becomes a city on his own.

cheekyDo you know what happens at the Feria? Well, first they have the ‘Fish Night’. It is an evening when they eat traditionally fish for dinner. After they put the lights on, crack open the Sherry and head for the ‘Caseta’, it’s time to party!

winkDid you know there are 1000 of these ‘casetas’? They are equipped with a bar, kitchen and substantial music system. From early afternoon, they drinking, eating a lot of tapas, the music is getting louder and in the late evening, you have a lot of Flamenco shows.

heartOne funny fact: Did you know that Princes Maxima and Prince Willem Alexander from the Netherlands met each other at the Fair?

 

Some tips:

1. Do you not have any rhythm for dance? Before you come to the fair, take some dance lessons and dance all night long!

2. The people here cannot speak English very well. Take some Spanish lessons or take a dictionary with you and communicate with the friendly Sevillians.

3. Don’t be afraid to get into a public tent. The Sevillians love real party animals. Go for it!
