Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza
Seville is known for its rich culture, beautiful architecture and traditions. One of the most iconic and controversial spots in the city is the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, the oldest and one of the most prestigious bullfighting arenas in Spain. The history of Plaza de Toros
Construction of the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza began in 1761 and was completed in 1881. It was built in an elegant Baroque architectural style. The arena has a characteristic round shape, something that was unique at the time, as older arenas often had a rectangular shape. It became home to the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, a chivalric order that played an important role in promoting bullfighting as a sport and tradition.
Architecture and features
The arena has a striking yellow and white facade, which fits perfectly into Seville’s cityscape. About 12,000 spectators can fit in the arena, making it one of the smaller but most respected bullrings in Spain. The atmosphere in the arena is intense and compelling, especially during the famous Feria de Abril, when the best matafors are in the arena.
Inside, you will find, among other things, the royal loge, where the Spanish royal family and other high-class visitors are seated. There is also a chapel where matadors pray before entering arena, and the old stables where the bulls are kept before entering the ring.
Bullfighting in Seville
Bullfighting is declining in popularity in many parts of Spain, but in Andalusia it remains a deep-rooted tradition. The season runs from Easter Sunday to mid-October, with around 30 fighting days a year. The main fights take place during the Feria de Abril, Seville’s big spring festival. This is when the best toreros enter the ring and thousands of spectators gather to watch the fights.
At the same time, this tradition provokes much debate. Opponents of bullfighting point out the animal suffering and call for a ban, while proponents see it as an essential part of Spanish culture and heritage. Regardless of your opinion on the matter, it is clear that the Maestranza plays an important role in Seville’s history and identity.
