When you think of Seville, you probably picture flamenco, tapas, orange trees and… heat. A lot of heat. In summer, temperatures easily soar above 40°C. Lovely if you’re into sunbathing, but sometimes, you just want… the beach.

And then many people think: “But Seville isn’t even near the coast?” True! But good news: within 1 to 1.5 hours, you can be sinking your toes into the sand, cocktail in hand, and feeling that sweet sigh of relief. Time to cool off and enjoy! During summer, a large part of the local population heads to the beach – and the one in Cádiz might be the most popular. Which also means it can get very crowded this time of year!

We’ve listed the Top 5 beaches that are perfect for a day trip from Seville, or a spontaneous weekend getaway (if you decide not to come back). Find out how to get there by car or public transport – plus our best tips for a refreshing beach day!

1. Matalascañas: Close & Dune-Lined

Distance from Seville: ± 1 hour
Travel time by Damas bus: ± 2 hours
Vibe: Family-friendly, relaxed, spacious

Matalascañas is the closest beach to Seville. It borders the Doñana National Park, so you’ll be surrounded by dunes, birds, and endless stretches of sand. The beach is wide – even on busy days there’s plenty of space. Great for swimming, walking, or just catching a breeze.

Perfect for a quick escape: grab your swimsuit, hop in the car, and in an hour you’ll be floating in the Atlantic. Bonus: lots of beachfront bars (chiringuitos) serving fresh seafood and cold drinks. You can also walk along the peaceful promenade and visit the half-submerged ancient watchtower, Torre la Higuera. Nature lovers can explore a nearby trail into Doñana as well.

Pro tip: Bring a parasol. Shade is your best friend out here.

Getting there without a car:
Catch the Damas bus at Plaza de Armas in Seville. It runs 3 times a day and takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. Tickets are usually around €10.
Tip: Book ahead for weekends – it’s a popular spot!

2. Playa de Bolonia: A Hidden Paradise with Roman Ruins

Distance: ± 176 km
Public transport time: ± 3 hours
Vibe: Wild, natural, untouched – and cultural

Imagine a beach without high-rises or big resorts, with stunning dunes and clear waters… Welcome to Bolonia. This is one of Andalusia’s best-kept secrets. Swim in turquoise water, climb giant dunes, and explore the Roman city of Baelo Claudia – right on the sand.

Nature and history go hand in hand here. And because it’s a bit further out, it’s often quieter, even in summer. A real must if you’re after peace and beauty.

Getting there without a car:
Take a Comes bus from Prado de San Sebastián to Facinas (near Tarifa). From there, grab a taxi or local bus to Bolonia (± 20 mins). The total journey is about 3 hours and costs around €20–30.

Tip: Plan this as a day trip – go early, and catch the sunset on your way back!

3. El Palmar – Surf, Chill & Golden Sunsets

Distance: ± 165 km
Public transport time: ± 2.5 to 3 hours
Vibe: Young, boho, surfy – chilled beach bars & great energy

If you’re looking for a beach that’s as laid-back as you are, El Palmar is your place. It’s the top surf destination in the region – expect surfboards, dreadlocks, sun-faded T-shirts, and chill music coming from beach bars. Plus: golden sand, epic sunsets, and a free-spirited vibe.

You can take a surf lesson, sip a cold drink with your feet in the sand, or just lay out your towel and forget the world for a while. Perfect for cooling off from that intense Sevillian sun.

Getting there without a car:
Take a bus to Conil de la Frontera (e.g., with Comes from Seville), then a local bus or taxi to El Palmar (± 15 mins). Blablacar carpools to El Palmar or Vejer are also a good option. Cost: €15–25.

Tip: Stay for sunset – the light here is truly magical!

4. Playa de la Victoria (Cádiz) – City & Sea in One

Distance: ± 120 km
Public transport time: ± 1.5 hours
Vibe: Lively, urban, accessible – perfect for combining beach and city

Playa de la Victoria is a long, well-kept city beach in Cádiz. Here, you can enjoy the sea and explore one of Europe’s oldest cities. The promenade is lined with terraces, and there are plenty of great places to eat.

Best part: you hop off the train, walk 10 minutes, and you’re on the beach! A great way to cool off and enjoy some sightseeing all in one.

Getting there without a car:
Take the Renfe Media Distancia train (line 65) from Santa Justa or San Bernardo to Cádiz. It takes 1 hour and 35 minutes, and it’s very comfy. Tickets: €13–18. You can also take a Comes bus from Prado de San Sebastián, but it’s slightly longer (± 1 hour 45 mins).

Tip: Bring your towel and your camera – Cádiz is stunning!

5. Zahara de los Atunes – Elegant Evenings & Quiet Bliss

Distance: ± 196 km
Public transport time: ± 2.5–3 hours
Vibe: Calm, stylish, romantic – a little hidden gem

Looking for true relaxation? Zahara de los Atunes is your beach escape. This charming village with its wide beach is known for dreamy sunsets, crystal-clear water, and delicious seafood.

Zahara is quieter than places like Tarifa or Cádiz, and feels a bit more elegant than other beaches. Perfect for a romantic day by the sea, or just to read a book and cool off with a swim. And since it’s a bit farther out, it stays blissfully less crowded.

Getting there without a car:
Take a Comes bus via Barbate from Prado de San Sebastián. The trip takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, with a quick transfer in Barbate. Tickets are around €20–30.

Tip: Consider staying the night – Zahara is lovely after dark too!
