Seville is one of Spain’s most beautiful and iconic cities, renowned for its impressive architecture, historic buildings, narrow streets, impressive palaces, and vibrant culture. Did you know that Seville is not only popular with tourists, but also with filmmakers from all over the world? They come to Seville to shoot films and series.

Seville has been used for various international film productions for over sixty years. What makes the city so unique for directors is its architecture, historical locations, and versatility. This allows Seville to represent multiple locations, such as a medieval city, a planet, or another country. In this blog, you can read why Seville is so popular for filming and which well-known films and series have been shot here.

What makes it attractive

So why is Seville so attractive to filmmakers? One of the main reasons is the city’s unique architecture. In Seville, you can find a mix of different architectural styles, such as Moorish and Renaissance architecture. This allows different eras or countries to be recreated.

One of the most famous locations is the well-known Plaza de España, which is considered one of the city’s most impressive monuments. Its shape, bridges and ornate, colorful tiles make it the perfect film set. Many visitors consider this square to be one of the most beautiful monuments in Europe.

Another good example is the Real Alcázar, the royal palace with a beautiful garden and stunning Moorish architecture. This location is very popular for filming due to its spectacular appearance and its ability to represent different historical settings during filming.

In addition to Plaza de España and the Real Alcázar, there are many other locations that are often used for filming, such as Casa de Pilatos, Plaza de América, the University of Seville, the Alfonso XIII hotel, and many different streets throughout the city center. Seville also enjoys many hours of sunshine, a warm climate and stable, sunny weather, which means that film shoots are not delayed by bad weather conditions, for example.

Seville also has a long film tradition and has been an important film location in Spain for over sixty years. Many different genres have been filmed here, from historical to science fiction films.

Famous films

In recent years, many different films have been shot in Seville, some of which have made the city internationally recognizable. You are probably curious to know which films were shot in Seville, so here are a few examples.

One of the most famous films shot here is Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Plaza de España was used as the setting for this film, representing the planet Naboo. The impressive architecture of Plaza de España made the scene look like a fairytale and futuristic world, but it is a large historical square.

Another film shot here is Lawrence of Arabia. Various locations in Seville were used for this film, namely Plaza de América, the Real Alcázar and Casa de Pilatos. These locations were chosen to imitate the Middle East, which is very easy to do in Seville. This is due to the Moorish and Renaissance architecture of these locations, which created an exotic and historical atmosphere.

The film Knight and Day was also partly filmed in Seville, using various locations that can be seen in the film. Locations used for this film include Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, Maestranza, Plaza de Toros and parts of the historic city center. These locations provided a dynamic backdrop for the action scenes in the film.

Famous series

In addition to films, several series have also been made in Seville, and the city is still regularly used for international and Spanish series. Here are a few examples of series that have been filmed here.

We will start with one of the most famous series, Game of Thrones. The Real Alcázar was used as the palace of the kingdom of Dorne in Game of Thrones. The Real Alcázar was the perfect location for this, with its gardens, arches, and palace halls, which provided the perfect exotic atmosphere for the series. Game of Thrones is a truly successful series, and as a result, many fans came to Seville to see the film location in real life.

The well-known Netflix series The Crown was also filmed in Seville. For this series, they used the Alfonso XII hotel to recreate a Californian villa, and San Juan de Aznalfarache was used as a backdrop for a Greek city in the 1950s. This shows that Seville can also represent other countries and cities.

In addition, a new series called Young Sherlock has just been released, which was partly filmed in Seville. The main locations for this series were Casa de Pilatos, Casino de la Exposición, the Real Alcázar and the city center. The historic buildings and streets of Seville perfectly matched the 19th-century atmosphere of the story.

Film tourism

Because so many films and series have been shot in Seville, the city has also become more popular. Many fans of the films or series want to visit the film locations. This is also known as film tourism. Films and series help a city to become more internationally known, attracting tourists from all over the world. This means that the film industry has not only a cultural but also an economic impact on Seville.
