If you walk through Seville for the first time in summer, it can take some getting used to. During the day it sometimes seems as if the city is taking a step back. Streets are quieter, some shops close temporarily and at the hottest times of the day people mainly look for the shade. But wait for the sun to slowly set. Seville changes completely around 9:00 PM.

Terraces fill up, families gather in squares, children play outside, and groups of friends meet for a drink or late evening meal. Where you may have felt that the city was quiet during the day, it seems at night that everyone comes out at the same time. And that has everything to do with one important factor: the heat.

The rhythm of Seville is determined by the temperature

Seville is known for its warm summers. In July and August, daytime temperatures can easily exceed 35 degrees and on some days the temperature is even higher. Especially at noon and late afternoon it can be unpleasantly warm to walk outside for a long time.

That is why Seville has a different daily rhythm in the summer than many Northern European cities. Life is, as it were, shifted to the cooler hours of the day.

Afternoon is often a time to take it easy. People go home for a long lunch, cool down or simply get some rest. When the sun becomes less bright and the temperature slowly starts to drop, the city starts to move again.

And that moment often only comes after 9:00 PM.

This can be surprising for visitors at first. You can walk up a square around 9:30 PM and wonder why it is suddenly so busy. However, it is the most normal thing in the world for the inhabitants of Seville.

When the sun goes down, Seville comes out

One of the most beautiful ways to experience summer in Seville is therefore simply to be outside when the evening starts.

Around 8:30 PM you often notice that the atmosphere changes. The sun is lower, the streets are getting warmer and people are slowly leaving their homes. The terraces become fuller around 21:00 and the city is bustling at 22:00.

Squares such as Plaza del Salvador and Plaza de la Alfalfa become meeting places. Families sit outside together, friends drink something and children play on the street.

The parks and historic streets also have a completely different atmosphere in the evening. The heat from the stones slowly starts to decrease and walking becomes much more pleasant.

Why eating in Seville starts so late

The Spanish food culture also fits in perfectly with this rhythm. In Seville it is quite normal to dine later than you may be used to.

A restaurant can still be relatively quiet at 20:00, while the same place is completely full a few hours later. Dinner in Seville is therefore not always something you want to finish as soon as possible. It is a social moment.

A drink, some tapas, a conversation and then maybe an ice cream or a second drink somewhere: the evening can easily last for hours.

This also explains why you still see so many families with children outside during a warm summer evening. For visitors from countries where children go to bed around 7:00 PM, it can be striking to see young children playing in a square at 11:00 PM. In Seville it is simply part of summer life.

Culture starts when the day cools

The high temperatures also affect the city’s cultural program. Many activities are consciously organized in the evening.

Outdoor concerts, flamenco performances, theatre performances, summer cinemas and other events often only start when the worst heat is over. An event that starts at 10:00 PM may sound late for some visitors, but it is an ideal time in Seville.

This makes the evening an important part of cultural life.

You can eat tapas first, then go to a concert and then walk quietly through the illuminated streets of the historic center. In the summer, no one has to be in a hurry to be home before dark. The evening is just when something happens.

Discover Seville when the city wakes up

For visitors this also means that you can organize your day in Seville smartly. Walking through the city for hours in the middle of the day during the greatest heat is not always the most pleasant way to discover Seville. As soon as the temperature becomes more pleasant in the evening, it is an ideal time to go out.

Cycling fits perfectly with this rhythm of the city. You can take the time during the day to relax and grab the bike later in the day when Seville slowly comes to life. For example, cycle through the historic center, along the Guadalquivir or through different neighbourhoods and discover the city as night falls.

Those who prefer to go out themselves can also rent a bicycle from us. This way you determine when you leave, which route you take and how long you want to be on the road. An evening ride is also a great way to experience Seville in a different way: the temperatures are more pleasant, the streets become more lively and the squares come to life.
