The summer holidays are slowly coming to an end, and in Seville the city is getting ready for the new school year. In September, the streets change: children return to school, parents take their children to class, and schools open their doors again. But before that happens, a lot of work needs to be done behind the scenes. Schools are cleaned and improved, school supplies are arranged, and the city works on the safety and maintenance of educational buildings.
Schools are being prepared
An important part of the preparations is maintaining the schools. In 2026, Seville City Council announced several investments to improve educational buildings. In total, around €2.5 million will be spent on measures for schools. These include safety improvements, renovations, and upgrades to classrooms and sanitary facilities.
At various schools, classrooms, toilets, and other areas are being renovated. Some classrooms are being made more modern, accessible, and better suited to the needs of students. Electricity systems, water pipes, ventilation, and sanitary facilities are also being upgraded at several schools.
Cleaning also plays an important role. During the final days of August and at the beginning of September, schools are thoroughly cleaned so that students can start the new school year in a fresh and hygienic environment. The preparations therefore begin well before the first school bell rings.
Safety receives extra attention
In addition to maintenance, school safety is also an important priority. The city has approved a new contract for the surveillance and security of public schools. This contract runs from 2026 to 2028 and includes alarm systems, inspections, and security patrols.
This is particularly important because schools are used less during the holiday period. Increased supervision and security measures can help prevent problems such as vandalism and break-ins. This means students and teachers can return to school safely in September.
Not every family has the same opportunities
For some families, the start of the school year also means additional financial pressure. Schoolbooks, a backpack, writing materials, and other supplies can become quite expensive. That is why Seville City Council has organized the Equípate programme. Families in difficult financial circumstances were able to apply for free backpacks and school supplies for the 2026–2027 school year. The materials will be distributed before the start of the new school year.
In this way, Seville is trying to ensure that children do not start the new school year without the necessary supplies. The aim is to reduce financial differences between families and ensure that every child can start with equal opportunities.
September means a new beginning
Preparing for September is therefore about much more than simply opening the school doors. The city has to make sure that buildings are safe and clean, classrooms are ready, and families can receive support when necessary. September is also a time of change for parents and students themselves. After weeks of holiday, they have to get used to fixed schedules, homework, and a daily routine again.
For Seville, the return to school is therefore an important moment. The city is investing in its schools and trying to ensure that students can start the new school year well. When the streets become busier with schoolchildren again in September, that will be the visible result of weeks and months of preparation behind the scenes.
