Every year, an antique and second-hand book fair takes place at Plaza de San Francisco in Seville. Here, it is also known as Feria del Libro Antiguo y de Ocasión. This year it will once again be held, running from September 26th to October 19th. The stalls at Plaza de San Francisco are filled with all kinds of books — from old classics to newly released titles. It’s also a wonderful way to discover the city’s history and culture.
A Centuries-Old Tradition in Seville
Second-hand book markets have been held at Plaza de San Francisco for many years. The very first official La Feria del Libro took place in 1934. However, it was not until the 1970s that it grew into a true cultural festival and became one of Andalusia’s most important literary events.
In the past, libraries or bookstores weren’t easily accessible to everyone. That’s why La Feria del Libro was created as a solution. It has continued throughout the years, welcoming everyone. Publishers also use this fair as a chance to showcase themselves and gain publicity. Everyone is welcome — and you’ll find a bit of everything!
A Meeting Place for Book Enthusiasts
Of course, you can buy books here, but it’s also much more than that: the fair serves as a meeting place for people. Locals and tourists strike up conversations, united by their love of books. They talk about favorite authors, genres, or beloved titles. So, it’s not just a market where you can buy books, but also a place where you might even make new friends.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
The fair is open Monday to Sunday, though the opening hours differ.
- Monday to Friday: 11:00 – 14:00 and 17:00 – 21:00
- Weekends: 11:00 – 14:30 and 17:00 – 21:00
Since Plaza de San Francisco is located right in the city center, we recommend parking outside the center if you’re coming by car and walking the rest of the way. Finally, it’s always handy to bring some cash, as not all stalls have card machines.
