Ceramics from Triana: craftsmanship and tradition
Triana is a vibrant neighborhood on the west side of the Guadalquivir River. It’s known for flamenco, craftsmanship, and above all: ceramics. You’ll see this art form all over Seville — from tiled facades and squares to decorations in churches and palaces. During our bike tour through Seville, we also visit Triana, where you can see how important ceramics still are today.
The history of ceramics in Triana
Ceramic production in Triana has been around for centuries. The clay from the river was perfect for making tiles, plates, and vases. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Triana was even the most important center for ceramics in Spain. Many of Seville’s tiled artworks come from this very neighborhood.
You can still see Moorish influences in the ceramics — geometric patterns and bright colors were their signature. Later on, Spanish artisans added their own styles, creating a unique blend of cultures.
