October 12th is a special day in Spain every year. That’s when Día de la Hispanidad is celebrated. This holiday commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America about 530 years ago. It’s not only celebrated in Spain but also in all other Spanish-speaking countries, as it’s an official holiday. The day marks the moment Columbus reached America and began spreading Spanish culture across the world. It’s a day of both pride and reflection.

What is Día de la Hispanidad?

In 1492Christopher Columbus set out on a voyage around the world. His original goal was to find a new route to Asia, but instead, he arrived in what was then an undiscovered continent — America. On October 12, 1492, he took his first steps on American soil, marking a turning point in history. Spanish influence began to shape the Americas, which eventually became known as Latin America.

How is Día de la Hispanidad celebrated?

In Spain, it’s a national holiday. A large military parade is held in Madrid, attended by the King and Queen of Spain. Fighter jets fly over the city, leaving red and yellow trails in the sky — the colors of the Spanish flag. The streets fill with music, waving flags, and national pride. People come together to celebrate their country with joy and enthusiasm.

In Latin America, the celebrations take on a slightly different meaning. In countries like Mexico and Peru, the focus is more on indigenous cultures and life before Columbus arrived. There are colorful parades, traditional dances, music, and people wearing cultural costumes, highlighting the diversity and history of the region.

The city of Seville also joins in the celebration. In the Seville Cathedral, a special mass is held to commemorate the discovery of America and the connection between Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. Bishops, priests, and localsgather to pray and give thanks. The choir sings, and Columbus is remembered, as he is buried inside the cathedral. It’s a solemn yet proud moment for the city.
