Bordering the Real Alcazar de Sevilla and the Plaza de España, San Bernardo is a small neighbourhood right outside the city centre. What might not seem like much due to its surrounding residential apartment buildings, might just surprise you once you pass those. The neighbourhood might even be a good fallout base for your stay due to its peaceful and children-friendly character, while still having some of the city’s most important monuments at a short walking distance. Here’s our reasons why:
The parks for a moment to relax:
The San Bernardo neighbourhood is surrounded by two parks, Los Jardines de Murillo and Los Jardines del Prado de San Sebastian
Los Jardines de Morillos is a park bordering the Santa Cruz area. It is home to the Colombus Monument, a well-known landmark in our city. The park has some beautiful flora, which especially in spring cause for colourful views. The park oozes peace and therefore might be the ideal stop after lots of sightseeing.
Los Jardines del Prado de San Sebastian on the other hand is more of an open space, hosting the occasional flea-market and other events. The park also has a playground for the kids and an open-air bar for some refreshment.
Every year the Festival of the Nations takes place in this park. The event starts mid-September and lasts for more than a month until November 2nd. The festival is a great occasion to taste specialties from all over the world accompanied by numerous performances for adults as well as children.
The beautiful buildings and houses
This picture presents a part of the Fabrica de Artilleria. A factory which was once used for making artillery is now empty and open for visitors. Might be an interesting visit for the real fans, but for others we’d say it’s best to just enjoy the outside view of the building and the surrounding area.
Another building in the area that IS worth an inside look is La Parroquia de San Bernardo where at the moment their Paso’s for Semana Santa are still displayed, but to catch a glance of those you’ll have to be quick
The students
Due to the university campus at Prado de San Bernardo, the area of Viapol is one with many bars and little eateries where students chill outside during their break. No shortage of terraces in this area. Many students of course also mean cheap prices, a good place for a quick bite or a refreshing drink for those traveling on a budget!
And finally – OF COURSE – the food!
Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE tapas, but when visiting a city, and therefore eating out a lot, eating the same type of food can get boring after a couple of days. San Bernardo is a perfect place to treat yourself with something special.
For those who love seafood, the Sea Market is the perfect place. This concept restaurant offers all kinds of beautiful dishes from sushi to the pure taste of fresh shrimp. They have a lot of space to eat in or on their big terrace, but you can also buy fresh fish to prepare at home.
We’d like to give you another option than seafood, but the seafood just happens to be remarkable in this area. Therefore: more seafood at Travedo Del Maro giving a creative and modern twist to tapas. No worries though, they also have meat!
A place mostly visited –and praised- by locals, definitely worth the visit. We recommend the pan de sardina and tataki de atun!
