During Holy Week in Seville, known locally as the impressive Semana Santa, the Hermandad de la Paz holds a special place. The Hermandad de la Paz is the first brotherhood to take to the streets on Palm Sunday, marking the start of a week filled with devotion, tradition, and emotion.

A Longing for Peace

How did the Hermandad de la Paz come into being? The origins of this brotherhood lie in a significant historical moment. It was founded in 1939, immediately after the Spanish Civil War, by a young soldier who was serving at the Parque Farmacéutico in Seville.

The Spanish Civil War had left deep scars, which is precisely why there was a longing for something new. This has evolved into a brotherhood that not only has religious significance but also conveys a message of peace. This ideal lives on in their motto, which is: “The fruit of Christ’s victory is peace.” This is a reference to Christ’s allegorical victory over the earthly realm.

An idea that originated among a group of young men soon grew into one of Seville’s most beloved brotherhoods. This brotherhood is firmly rooted in the El Porvenir district.

Development and growth of the brotherhood

In 1940, the Hermandad de la Paz held its first procession, just one year after its foundation. Since 1940, the Hermandad has become a permanent and iconic feature of the Domingo de Ramos.

The Hermandad de la Paz sets off from the Parroquia de San Sebastián and passes through, amongst other places, the Parque de María Luisa. This gives the route a very unique and somewhat poetic character.

In recent years, the Hermandad has become hugely popular; it is now regarded as one of the most visited and beloved processions of Palm Sunday and has a strong bond with its neighborhood and members.

Significance of the statues

In the procession of the Hermandad de la Paz, two important statues take center stage: Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Victoria and María Santísima de la Paz.

The figure of Christ depicts the moment when Jesus continues his way under the weight of the cross. This is a powerful symbol, intended to represent suffering and perseverance. The Virgen de la Paz carries an olive branch, the universal symbol of peace. Peace also ties in perfectly with the origins of the brotherhood.

Together, these two images tell a story that goes beyond mere religion. It is a story of hope, recovery, and a new beginning after a difficult time.

Domingo de Ramos

When the Hermandad de la Paz opens its doors on Palm Sunday, it feels as though Seville is waking up. This is the first major highlight of Holy Week. At the same time, it marks the start of the week during which Seville is completely transformed.

The Hermandad has continued to evolve in recent years; on occasion, the routes have been slightly adjusted to enhance the spectators’ experience or to improve the flow of the procession, whilst ensuring the essence of the tradition is preserved.

More than just a tradition

The Hermandad de la Paz is more than just a procession on Palm Sunday; it is a living symbol of Seville itself. The Hermandad originated during a period of conflict and has now evolved into a message of unity and peace. Every year, this Hermandad touches the hearts of thousands of people on Palm Sunday.

When the Hermandad de la Paz fills the streets, it marks not only the start of Holy Week, but also a shared sense of faith, remembrance, and beauty. It is this combination that makes Seville so unique.
