Anyone walking through Seville will soon notice a symbol that resembles an 8. With the letters NO and Do. You see it on manhole covers, flags, benches, old city gates and modern buildings. It is everywhere, as if the city is whispering: don’t forget who I am. This is NODO, the enigmatic emblem that Seville has carried with it for centuries. A symbol that is more than just a logo. It is a story, an identity, a tribute.

The story of NODO, a legend that lives on

The story of NODO dates back to the time of King Alfonso X, also known as El Sabio (the Wise). The king became embroiled in a conflict with his own son, Sancho, who wanted to take over the throne. While many cities and nobles sided with the son, Seville remained loyal to Alfonso. The city stood firm, even when it would have been politically easier to yield. Legend has it that Alfonso X was touched by this loyalty. Seville responded with a message that was equally poetic. It read: “NO-ME-HA-DEJADO”, or “she has not abandoned me”. In the middle of that message was a knot called “Madeja”. The pronunciation of “Madeja” is similar to “maja”, which made the sentence sound like a play on words: “No-madeja-do”. And so the symbol was born: NO+(knot)+DO. A visual love letter from a king to his city. No one knows for sure if this is exactly how it happened, but in Seville, the truth of a story is less important than its soul. And the soul of NODO is loyalty, pride and solidarity.

The influence on the city: an identity in a symbol

NODO is not a marketing ploy. It is not a slogan devised by an agency. It is a symbol that the city bears like a family crest. The people of Seville wear it with pride, emotion and a great deal of history. And you can feel that influence throughout the city in various ways.

1.    A visual signature

NODO is Seville’s signature. It appears on official documents, on municipal workers’ uniforms, on trams, on bridges. It is a constant reminder that Seville is a city with a story that is greater than the sum of its neighbourhoods.

2.    Sense of connection

For the locals in Seville, NODO is not a tourist symbol, but part of their identity. It stands for loyalty, character and the ability to stand firm (literally and figuratively). Even when history is not entirely clear. It is a symbol that connects people from generation to generation.

3. Core of pride

Seville is a city that thrives on emotion, such as the festive weeks during Semana Santa, Feria, flamenco and football. Everything is experienced intensely. NODO fits perfectly into this emotional culture. It is a symbol that people proudly wear on T-shirts, jewellery or even tattoos. Not because it is trendy, but because it feels like coming home and provides a sense of connection.

4.    A story that inspires

Architects incorporate the symbol into modern buildings. Artists use it as a motif. Local entrepreneurs subtly incorporate it into their logos. NODO is a source of creativity. A symbol that invites reinterpretation. Without losing its essence.

NODO says: I won’t let you go. And anyone who knows Seville knows that this is not a threat, but a promise.
