In the beautiful city of Seville, Spain, there is a very old and special religious group called La Hermandad de Los Negritos. This name means “The Brotherhood of the Little Black People”, and it has a long and important history. It was started over 600 years ago, and it is one of the oldest brotherhoods in the city.
A brotherhood for black people
The brotherhood was created in 1393 by a church leader named Archbishop Gonzalo de Mena. At that time, many Black people lived in Seville. Most of them came from Africa and were brought to Spain as slaves. Life was very hard for them.
The archbishop wanted to help these people. He gave them a place to pray, take care of each other, and feel like part of a community. This brotherhood was one of the first groups in Europe made just for Black people to practice their faith.
Helping each other
For many years, the brotherhood helped its members when they were sick, poor, or when someone died. They also celebrated religious days together and joined the city’s Holy Week processions — something very important in Seville.
This was a big deal at the time, because most of society did not give Black people many rights. But in this brotherhood, they had a voice and a place.
The virgin of the angels
The brotherhood is especially known for their love of the Virgin of the Angels (in Spanish, Virgen de los Ángeles). Every year, on Holy Thursday during Semana Santa (Holy Week), they carry a beautiful statue of the Virgin through the streets of Seville.
The Virgin shows sadness, but also hope. She represents love, peace, and the strength to keep going even in hard times.
The brotherhood today
Today, the Hermandad de Los Negritos is open to everyone, not just people of African descent. But they still remember and honor their past. The church they use, called the Capilla de los Ángeles, is still active and full of history.
During Holy Week, many people come to see their procession. It’s a beautiful moment that shows faith, history, and unity — a reminder of how strong people can be, even when life is difficult.
