Discover a hidden piece of history by bike

Seville is known for its beautiful architecture, charming streets and impressive landmarks. However, besides the famous cathedral and the Real Alcázar, the city also has lesser-known historical sites that are definitely worth visiting. A great example is the Caños de Carmona, the historic aqueduct that played an important role in Seville’s water supply for centuries. It is a fascinating place for anyone who wants to discover more about the history of this Spanish city.

An aqueduct with a fascinating story

The Caños de Carmona was used to transport water from the area around Alcalá de Guadaíra to Seville. The water came from the Santa Lucía spring and travelled a considerable distance before reaching the city. The aqueduct consisted of brick arches, with several levels of arches in some sections.

The exact origins of the aqueduct are still debated. Some historians trace its construction back to Roman times, while others emphasise its major reconstruction during the period of Islamic rule. In the twelfth century, the aqueduct was largely rebuilt. In 1172, the renovated water system was officially put into use. It supplied water to various parts of Seville, including gardens, the royal palace and public fountains.

What makes the aqueduct so special is how it demonstrates the importance of water management in the past. Today, we take access to clean water for granted, but centuries ago, impressive engineering projects were needed to provide a city with a reliable water supply. The aqueduct is therefore not only a historical monument but also an example of the technical knowledge of earlier civilisations.

Discover a lesser-known side of Seville

Over the centuries, much of the original aqueduct has disappeared. However, several sections have survived, including parts along Calle Luis Montoto. These remains give visitors an idea of the scale and importance of the original structure.

Visiting the Caños de Carmona is a wonderful way to discover a different side of Seville. You can explore a piece of history that does not always receive as much attention as the city’s more famous tourist attractions. You can also easily combine your visit with exploring other neighbourhoods and historical sites around the city.

These lesser-known places are what make a city trip truly special. Instead of only visiting the main landmarks, you can discover the stories behind everyday life in the past. This gives you a better understanding of how Seville has developed over the centuries into the city we know today.
