In Seville, the Feria de Abril is one of the most iconic events of the year. For an entire week, the city comes alive with music, dance, colorful dresses, and deep-rooted Andalusian traditions. Streets fill with horse-drawn carriages, people dressed in traditional outfits, and an atmosphere that is both elegant and festive.

But even before the official start of the festival, a very special evening marks the beginning of the celebrations: El Pescaíto. This night usually takes place on the Monday evening before the Feria officially begins at midnight. It is considered a unique and meaningful moment, more intimate and traditional, where locals gather with family and close friends to kick off the festivities in a warm and authentic way.

The casetas: at the heart of the celebration

El Pescaíto takes place inside the casetas, large, decorated tents set up in the fairgrounds known as the Real de la Feria. Each caseta is usually private, belonging to a family, a group of friends, a company, or an association. Access is often restricted, which makes the experience feel exclusive and very local. However, there are also a few public casetas open to visitors, allowing tourists to experience this tradition.

During the Feria, these casetas become true social hubs where people eat, drink, dance, and celebrate together. On Pescaíto night, tables are beautifully set, traditional lanterns light up the space, and the atmosphere slowly becomes more festive. It is a special moment of reunion where all generations come together, from children to grandparents, sharing stories, laughter, and excitement for the week ahead.

The famous “pescaito frito”

The name of the evening comes from the main dish served at dinner: pescaito frito, which literally means “small fried fish.” This dish is a true symbol of Andalusian gastronomy. It is made of small fresh fish and seafood such as anchovies, squid, calamari, or shrimp, lightly coated in flour and fried in high-quality olive oil. Served hot and often accompanied by a slice of lemon, it is simple, crispy, and full of flavor.

This dinner is often accompanied by local drinks such as rebujito (a refreshing mix of Manzanilla or sherry with lemon soda) or wine. The meal reflects the spirit of sharing and conviviality, two essential values of the Feria. It is not just about eating, but about enjoying the moment together and celebrating Andalusian culture.

A warm and festive atmosphere

Beyond the meal, El Pescaíto is above all a moment of gathering and celebration. People talk, laugh, and reconnect, while music begins to fill the casetas. Musicians and playlists bring traditional rhythms, and little by little, the first sevillanas the traditional Andalusian dance appear on the dance floors.

Many women wear their beautiful flamenco dresses (trajes de gitana), and men often dress elegantly, adding to the charm and authenticity of the night. The atmosphere gradually builds up, but it remains relatively family-friendly, relaxed, and deeply rooted in tradition. It is a night to enjoy loved ones before the Feria becomes more intense, vibrant, and crowded in the following days.

The symbolic beginning of the Feria de Abril

El Pescaíto is much more than just a dinner. It is the symbolic starting point of the Feria de Abril. It represents the transition from everyday life to several days of celebration, music, dance, and cultural pride.

After this evening, one of the most anticipated moments takes place: the alumbrao, when thousands of lights are switched on at midnight, illuminating the fairground and officially opening the Feria. This magical moment transforms the entire area into a sparkling and unforgettable spectacle.

But for many locals, El Pescaíto remains the most authentic and heartwarming moment of the entire week a time where tradition, family, and joy come together in the most genuine way.
