Pumpkins, witches, ghosts and, of course, plenty of sweets! October 31st marks Halloween once again. Although Halloween might immediately make you think of America, this spooky celebration is becoming increasingly popular in Spain too. And what about Seville? With its centuries-old streets, mysterious stories and fascinating history, the city has everything it takes for a truly spooky Halloween.

But where does Halloween actually come from? And what can you do in Seville during this time of year? Let’s take a look at the history of Halloween and share some fun tips for experiencing this special time of year in Seville!

Where does Halloween actually come from?

Halloween as we know it today has its roots in several ancient traditions. Its origins can be traced back to the Celts, who celebrated a festival called Samhain more than 2,000 years ago. This festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark winter months.

According to Celtic beliefs, the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead became particularly thin on this night. People believed that spirits and other supernatural beings could return to earth. To protect themselves, they lit large bonfires and dressed up as ghosts and other frightening creatures.

Later, the festival also took on Christian influences. The Church declared November 1st All Saints’ Day. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve. Over time, this name eventually evolved into Halloween.

Over the centuries, the tradition spread throughout Europe and eventually reached America, where Halloween developed into the celebration we know today. Think of children dressing up and going door to door for trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins with scary faces and, of course, Halloween parties.

Halloween in Spain: Día de Todos los Santos

In Spain, this time of year also has a special meaning. Alongside Halloween, November 1st is celebrated as Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints’ Day). Traditionally, this is an important day when Spanish families remember their loved ones who have passed away.

Many people visit cemeteries on this day to place flowers on the graves of family members. There are also traditional sweets associated with this time of year, such as huesos de santo (saint’s bones), small marzipan pastries with a sweet filling, and buñuelos de viento, light and fluffy fried dough balls.

Nowadays, American Halloween traditions are becoming increasingly popular in Spain. Especially in larger cities, you can find events, costume parties and spooky activities. And Seville is no exception!

What can you do for Halloween in Seville?

Seville is famous for its beautiful architecture, lively squares and vibrant atmosphere. But when night falls and the narrow streets of the historic centre slowly grow dark, the city reveals a more mysterious side. Here are some fun activities to enjoy during Halloween in Seville.

1. Discover Seville’s spooky stories

Did you know that Seville is full of mysterious legends, old stories and fascinating historical events? Behind the city’s beautiful façades and monuments lie plenty of secrets.

During Halloween, it’s especially fun to explore the historic centre from a different perspective. Various organisations offer special evening walks and mysterious tours. Along the way, you’ll hear stories about haunted houses, unexplained events, historical crimes and legends that have been passed down through generations.

The old neighbourhood of Santa Cruz is a particularly interesting place to explore. With its narrow alleyways, hidden squares and historic buildings, it’s easy to imagine the centuries-old stories that surround this area.

2. Visit Isla Mágica in Halloween style
