On 12 October, Spain celebrates Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad), the country’s national holiday. The date refers to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America on 12 October 1492. At the time, Columbus believed that he had reached Asia. His voyage nevertheless marked the beginning of an important period in Spanish history and in the contacts between Europe and America.
Seville also celebrates Hispanic Day with a variety of activities. The city has a special connection with Spain’s voyages of exploration and the history of Latin America. Seville is home to the Archivo de Indias, for example, which preserves thousands of historical documents relating to Spanish exploration and colonial history.
