When visiting Seville, most people think of the impressive Plaza de España, the cathedral and the charming streets of the historic city centre. But did you know that you can also discover a special hill in Parque de María Luisa? Monte Gurugú is a hidden gem where nature, history and tranquillity come together.
A small hill with a unique character
Monte Gurugú is located in the heart of the green Parque de María Luisa. It stands out for its stone staircase, lush vegetation and small waterfall. Although the hill is not particularly high, it gives this corner of the park a unique character.
The flowing water and shady surroundings make it a lovely place to relax, take photos or simply enjoy nature. Especially on hot days, the park is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Seville.
A name with a history
The name Monte Gurugú refers to the Gurugú mountain range in northern Morocco, an area associated with the military history of the early twentieth century.
Parque de María Luisa also has an interesting past. The area originally formed part of the gardens of the Palacio de San Telmo and was donated to the city of Seville at the end of the nineteenth century. In preparation for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the park took on its distinctive appearance, with monuments, pavilions and landscaped gardens.
Monte Gurugú is one of the park’s notable features and shows just how many surprises this green space has to offer.
What else can you discover nearby?
A visit to Monte Gurugú can easily be combined with other famous spots in the park. For example, take a walk to the iconic Plaza de España, where you can admire its impressive architecture, colourful ceramic tiles and small bridges.
Plaza de América is also worth a visit. This charming square is surrounded by remarkable buildings and green gardens, making it a lovely place to continue your walk.
Take your time exploring the smaller paths, too. These are often where you will discover the quieter and lesser-known corners of Seville.
Discover Seville from a different perspective
Seville has much more to offer than its most famous monuments. Sometimes, it is the hidden places that make a visit truly special.
Monte Gurugú is a perfect example: a green oasis where you can enjoy nature, history and a peaceful moment in the heart of the city.
