When people think of Seville, they often picture a bustling city full of life, lively squares and atmospheric terraces. Yet in summer, Seville reveals a very different side to itself. As soon as the summer holidays begin and temperatures regularly rise above 40 degrees, many Sevillanos leave the city.
Why do the residents leave Seville?
The extreme heat plays the biggest part in this. Although the people of Seville are used to hot summers, July and August are often too hot to stay in the city comfortably. That’s why many residents choose to seek relief from the heat by spending a few weeks at the beach or in a holiday home outside the city. The result? One of Europe’s hottest cities is temporarily transformed into a surprisingly quiet destination.
Furthermore, August is traditionally the month when many Sevillians take their holidays. Businesses temporarily close their doors, shops adjust their opening hours, and many restaurants also take a short summer break. As a result, daily life in the city changes noticeably and takes on a different rhythm to the rest of the year.
A city with a different rhythm
Although Seville slows down, that certainly doesn’t mean the city is deserted. On the contrary, life adapts to the temperatures. Early in the morning, you’ll see people doing their shopping, having a coffee on a terrace or walking their dogs. Around midday, the streets grow increasingly quiet and locals and visitors seek the cool of indoor spaces. It is only when the sun slowly sets that Seville comes to life again. Then the terraces fill up once more and people stroll through the atmospherically lit streets.
It is precisely this different daily rhythm that makes a visit to Seville in summer so special. You experience the city in a more relaxed way and get a better sense of how daily life adapts to the warm climate.
An advantage for visitors
For tourists, this quieter period also has its advantages. Many well-known attractions are less crowded than in spring or autumn. You’ll have more space to explore the narrow streets of the historic city centre and can enjoy the impressive architecture, atmospheric squares and hidden corners that make Seville so special at a leisurely pace.
Of course, the heat remains a key factor. That’s why it’s wise to plan activities early in the day and avoid the hottest hours of the afternoon. That way, you’ll get the most out of your visit and experience the city at its most pleasant.
Discovering Seville in the morning
If you really want to experience Seville in the summer, you’d be well advised to explore the city early in the morning. The temperature is still pleasant then, the streets are quiet, and you can see Seville slowly waking up before the heat of the day sets the pace.
We notice this difference during our cycle tours too. In the morning, you’ll experience a relaxed atmosphere and discover Seville at a time when the city is still entirely its own. It is precisely this combination of tranquillity, history and the first signs of life of the day that makes a morning tour in summer a special way to get to know Seville.
