If you visit Seville in August, you’ll immediately notice that it’s a lot quieter than in other months of the year. The streets are less crowded, there are fewer locals on the terraces, and some shops and restaurants are even closed. But why is that, exactly?
Holidays
The main reason is the summer holidays. For many Spaniards, August is the month to take a holiday. This also applies to the residents of Seville and the surrounding areas. As August is one of the hottest months of the year, many people choose to leave the city temporarily. Daytime temperatures often rise above 40 degrees, making it more pleasant for many residents to spend a few weeks by the coast.
Many Sevillians have family living by the coast or own a holiday home or flat in seaside resorts on the Costa de la Luz or the Costa del Sol. As a result, whole families head to the seaside in August to enjoy the cooler weather, the beach and their holidays.
Less hustle and bustle in the city
With so many residents away on holiday, the atmosphere in Seville changes. Many small shops, bars and restaurants close their doors for a few weeks. Other businesses do remain open but adjust their opening hours. For example, some shops don’t reopen until late afternoon or even in the evening, once the worst of the heat has passed.
Many offices and small family-run businesses also operate with a skeleton staff in August or close temporarily. As a result, the city feels less crowded and there is less traffic on the streets. For visitors, this means a relaxed atmosphere in which you can explore Seville at a leisurely pace.
Fewer tourists than expected
Although Seville is a popular tourist destination, many travellers choose to avoid the city in August precisely because of the extreme heat. Temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees are not uncommon. That is why many tourists prefer to visit Seville in spring or autumn, when the weather is more pleasant. As a result, well-known attractions such as the Plaza de España, the Royal Palace (Real Alcázar) and Seville Cathedral are often less crowded than in other months.
Advantages of visiting in August
Despite the high temperatures, visiting Seville in August also has many advantages. You often don’t have to queue for as long at popular attractions and you can stroll through the historic streets at your leisure. Hotels also regularly offer lower rates during this period than in spring or autumn. However, it’s wise to plan your day carefully: visit attractions early in the morning or later in the evening and take a break during the hottest part of the day.
If you want to discover Seville in August in a relaxed and unique way, a cycle tour is the ideal choice. In the morning, the temperature is still pleasant, and the streets are much quieter than later in the day. This allows you to cycle comfortably past the city’s most famous sights as well as its hidden gems. Along the way, you’ll learn more about the history, culture and daily life in Seville, allowing you to get to know the city in a completely different way. A bike tour is therefore the perfect way to explore the city and make the most of the peaceful atmosphere that August brings.
