Just a few kilometers from Seville is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Spain, Itálica. You may have seen the name come by while looking for sights in the Seville area. Yet many visitors skip this special place, while Itálica offers a unique opportunity to travel back to the time of the Roman Empire.

From an impressive amphitheater to ancient mosaics and wide Roman streets: Itálica shows what life looked like almost 2,000 years ago. In this blog you will discover why a visit to Itálica is definitely worth it.

One of the oldest Roman cities in Spain

Itálica was founded in 206 BC by the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio, better known as Scipio Africanus. The city was built after a major victory over the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War. Originally, Itálica was intended as a residence for Roman soldiers who had fought in the war.

In the centuries that followed, the city grew into a prosperous Roman settlement. Thanks to its strategic location and thriving trade, Itálica developed into one of the most important cities in the region. Today, the remains are among the best-preserved Roman ruins in Spain.

The impressive amphitheater

Itálica’s best-known structure is without doubt the enormous amphitheater. This theater could accommodate about 25,000 spectators, while the city itself probably had far fewer inhabitants. That shows how important Itálica was at the time.

Gladiator fights, wildlife hunting and other public events took place in the amphitheater. As you walk through the underground corridors today, you can imagine how gladiators prepared here before entering the arena. It is an impressive experience that gives you a glimpse into the daily life of the Romans.

Many visitors also recognize the amphitheater from the popular television series Game of Thrones, in which it served as the backdrop for the Dragonpit in King’s Landing.

Beautiful mosaics and Roman streets

In addition to the amphitheater, Itálica is known for its excellently preserved mosaics. Several former villas show colorful floors that contain thousands of small stones. Many of these works of art depict mythological figures, animals and geometric patterns.

The wide cobbled streets, remains of bathhouses, temples and luxury homes also give a good idea of how advanced Roman society was. While walking through the ruins it seems like you are going back in time.

The birthplace of two Roman emperors

What many people don’t know is that Itálica was the birthplace of two famous Roman emperors: Trajan and Hadrian. Both played an important role in the expansion and development of the Roman Empire.

Emperor Trajan was known for enlarging the empire to its greatest extent. His successor Hadrian invested heavily in architecture and infrastructure and had Hadrian’s famous Wall built in Great Britain, among other things. The fact that these two emperors came from Itálica shows how important the city was at the time.

A perfect trip from Seville

Itálica is located about ten kilometers from the center of Seville and is therefore easy to reach. The quiet area is a nice contrast to the bustle of the city. It is an ideal destination for lovers of history, archeology and photography.

Even if you are normally not very interested in history, the impressive ruins and the special atmosphere make a visit more than worthwhile. You literally walk the same streets as the Romans almost two thousand years ago.
