5 things you MUST do in Cordoba

30 Mar 2016

It’s been a while since we highlighted a different city than Sevilla and we feel like it’s time to change that. Cordoba is a great trip to do when you’re coming to Sevilla, it’s a city with a lot to offer and we recommend spending at least one or two days there when you’re in Andalusia.

We have some tips for those who like to plan their trip ahead, because some things MUST be on your things-to-see-list!

Visit the Mezquita

To come straight to it, the Mezquita is the one thing you absolutely cannot miss when you visit Cordoba, or shall I say, when you visit Andalusia. This cathedral has switched between religious purposes from a catholic church, to a mosque, to a cathedral throughout the ages. Once upon a time the enormous was even split in two parts and therefore shared between Muslims and Christians. Something remarkable but it sadly didn’t last. Besides having a rich history, the Cathedral is also just breath-taking and a Walhalla for fans of Moorish architecture.

Take a walk over the Roman Bridge

This one is especially important for Game of Thrones fans! The bridge was featured in season 5 of the series and was shot by a drone as a base for the computer graphics added afterwards.

Of course we’d not only recommend you to visit it for its fame through the popular tv-series but also because it’s one of the most important landmarks in Cordoba and definitely worth you visit.

Visit the Alcazar of Cordoba

The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is located in the historic city of the centre right next to the river. Alcazar stands for palace and thus it once was the residence of members of the royal family. You can enjoy the beautiful courtyard, the colourful garden and the interesting architecture. Use this handy sheet for finding out opening hours and prices of the Alcazar and other museums and monuments.

Enjoy the colour the courtyard festival brings to the city

The best time of the year to visit Cordoba is in May. The city looks at its best thanks to the yearly competition of the best-looking courtyards. Balconies and courtyards get decorated richly with flowers and the festival gives you a unique opportunity to visit the ever-amazing looking ‘patios’ you can normally only catch a glance of from the outside. Beside the beautiful views you can also enjoy many flamenco shows, get some samples of tapas and taste the Montilla-Moriles Sherry. The tradition is even part of the UNESCO world heritage since 2012.

Do a bike- or a Segway tour

Of course, to really get to know the city with all its myths and legends, it’s best to go on a biketour or a Segway tour, depending on your preferences. It’s a good way of getting to know the city in a relaxed manner that doesn’t require hours of walking in the sun or sitting on a overcrowded tourist bus. Our specialized guides will make sure you know the city inside out and you’ll return home after the tour with a lot of amazing stories. More info on the tour you can find here.
