Cathedral, Alcázar and Archivo de Indias in Seville

25 Aug 2019

Plaza del Triunfo

In the center of Sevilla, you will find a square that is surrounded by three important places of
the city. On the square, you will see the monument of ‘Templete del Triunfo de Nuestra Señora
del Patrocinio’, after which the square is named. The second monument you will be able to
admire here, is Monumento a la Inmaculada Concepción, which is dedicated to the Immaculate
Conception of the virgin Mary. Every year on the 8 th of December, this monument is the central
part of the celebration of the day of the Immaculate Conception. This day is also the official
start of the Christmas season!

Seville Cathedral
Enough about the square itself, because the surrounding buildings are just as interesting! First
of all, there is the famous Cathedral that can’t be left unvisited. It is the largest Gothic church in
the whole world. The cathedral was completed in 1528 to demonstrate the city’s wealth as it
has become a major trading center in the years after the Reconquista. When visiting the
cathedral, you can go in the Giralda tower and at the height of 94 meter, you will have a
breathtaking view of the city of Seville. Secondly, you can visit the tomb of Columbus here! A
few years ago, research of the DNA has shown that it is genuinely Columbus. The cathedral
opens usually at 11am (except on Sunday) but always check the current opening hours! The best
time to visit is between 2pm and 5pm when the Spanish people are having lunch and siesta. The
entrance fee is only €9! During our daily bike tour, you will pass this cathedral and get more
information from the guide about this astonishing highlight of the city and other historical
buildings.

Real Alcázar
The second building we would recommend visiting is the Real Alcázar. This royal palace was
built in the 10 th century by the moors, but also many catholic kings that lived in this palace have
added parts to the building. In the breathtaking gardens you can wander around and just take it
all in. The place is full of colorful ceramic tiles that create the perfect opportunity to take some
beautiful pictures to share with the home front. Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? You might
recognize this place since a part of season 5 got recorded here! Opening hours are from 9:30am
until 7pm, but in the winter they close at 5pm. The entrance fee is €12,50.

The General Archive of the Indies
Last but not least, next to Plaza del Triunfo you will find the General Archive of the Indies. It is
the repository of extremely valuable archival documents that illustrate the history of the
Spanish Empire. The building is a great example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Before, all
the documentation regarding the overseas empire was spread amongst various archives, but in
1785 Charles III decided it was time that all these documents were housed here in Sevilla. It is
not just a small archive; the 80 million pages of documents and maps cover 9 kilometers of
shelves! A large part of the archive is dedicated to exhibitions for visitors. It gives you an insight
into the history of the Spanish Empire that you will never experience again. They are open from
Monday to Saturday from 9.30am until 5pm and on Sundays and in holidays from 10am to 2pm.
The entrance is free!
