Corpus Christi

09 Jun 2023

Yes, there is another holiday in Seville. The holiday we are going to talk about today is Corpus Christi. This holiday will take place on Thursday June 8. But what exactly does it mean?

The feast of Corpus Christi has a great tradition and many centuries of roots in the city of Seville. It is celebrated sixty days after Easter Sunday and always coincides on Thursday. This traditional feast of the Catholic Church begins in the late Middle Ages and is dedicated to the sacrament of the Eucharist, the body and blood of Christ, in its representation by means of bread and wine.

The Corpus Christi procession is the city's great public sacramental act; God is present in the streets of Seville for a few hours. It is therefore one of the most important manifestations of religiosity, faith and respect for the Catholics of Seville.

>At the dawn of Corpus Christi, there is a great atmosphere of cheers around the cathedral, one of the most radiant mornings in the festive calendar of Seville. The Giralda bells ring incessantly, even more when the detention leaves the cathedral to announce that God is on the street.

Whole families in their best clothes are looking for a corner not to miss this procession. The streets and squares feature aromatic plants ( sedge and rosemary ) and from the night before they are decorated with their best clothes. Altars are built on balconies, shop windows, doorways and churches with Eucharistic and Marian religious motifs referring to this feast.
