Good friday in Seville

01 Apr 2023

You've probably all read the blog about Semana Santa and the Macarena. These 2 are therefore very important for the city of Seville. But, what can you see all this week?

What does this mean and what happens?

On the night of 6 on 7 April, one of the oldest brotherhoods will go on the street To walk from their church to the cathedral. These brotherhoods starts Thursday evening and often come back the next morning/afternoon. But why do they do this? The tradition would come from the time of Carlos III. In the theme of modernization and urban laws. A law was adopted that only processions could be held during the day. Because you make a lot of noise in the night and it is easier for criminals to steal. But the Sevillians did not agree with this and therefore went against the law. They just went on the street for these processions and they are still doing this.

What churches are participating in? And why exactly do these churches?

There are 6 different brotherhoods that go down the street that night. If you want to see one of those, we will tell you now when they are.

El Silencio: They leave at 1:00am. They are at 2:21am at the cathedral and at 06:05am they are back at the starting point. They walk with 1350 Nazarenos.

El Gran Poder: They leave at 1:00 am. They are at 3:02 am at the cathedral and at 7:45 am they are back at the starting point. They walk with 2300 Nazarenos.

La Macarena: They leave at 00:00 am. They are at 4:13 am at the cathedral and at 13:30 pm they are back at the starting point. They walk with 4000 Nazarenos.

El Calvario: They leave at 4:00 am. They are at 5:54 am at the cathedral and at 8:00 am they are back at the starting point. They walk with 700 Nazarenos.

La Esperanza Triana: They leave at 1:40 am. They are at 6:22 am at the cathedral and at 14:00 pm they are back to the starting point. They walk with 2800 Nazarenos.

Los Gitanos: They leave at 2:30 am. They are at 7:45 am at the cathedral. And back at 13:30 pm at the start point. They walk with 2500 Nazarenos.

Because this procession sometimes takes up to 13 hours, we cannot cycle in the morning this Friday, April 7 so we are closed. We look forward to seeing you on your bike for one of those other days! ;)
