Juan Belmonte García is a well-known Spanish bullfighter and he is widely regarded as the greatest matador of all time.
Belmonte was born in the Triana district and was already active as a torero since 1908, in 1910 he made his debut and killed his first bull. He used to be part of several well-known bullfighter groups, the best-known group was Los Ninos Sevillanos.
Belmonte was different from other bullfighters because he developed his own style of parar, templar and mandar (stopping, tempering and controlling). A famous quote from him was ‘o te quitas tú, o te quita el toro’ which means ‘it is either me or the bull’. Belmonte always came very close to the bull unlike others who stayed far away. Because Belmonte got so close to the bull, he was often badly injured.
In Triana there is a monument of Belmonte. He's looking across the river TOwARDS Plaza de Toros. Also he has a hole in the place of his heart, if you look through it you see exactly the bullring sena across the street (nice for the picture ;)).
During our Daily tour we also go to Triana and we will well on the monument of Belmonte!
