La Velá de Santa Ana: the festival of Triana

Triana has always been and always will be a special part of Sevilla. This week, Triana celebrates the so called Velá de Santa Ana, dedicated to Santa Ana. She was the mother of Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus Christ. Nowadays, she is the patron saint of Triana.

From the 21st until the 26th of July you can be a part of the different festivities that take place. Take a look inside the casetas, which are decorated marquee tents. These tents resemble the casetas used during the Feria de Abril, which are usually private tents, but in the Velá de Santa Ana you can enter all of them!

Also do not forget to watch the dance competition, where people dance sevillanas, the very popular dance of Sevilla and its region. Both men and women dress up beautifully and are ready to amaze you with their dancing skills. And after a few drinks, you might even want to participate yourself!

Another interesting tradition is the sport referred to as la cucaña. In the river Guadalquivir there will be a boat with a horizontally placed pole. This pole is covered with grease or soap and on the end of the pole there is a flag. Daring people then have to try to climb the slippery pole in order to get the flag. Capturing the flag entitles the person to a delicious Iberian ham.
