La Torre de Oro is one of the landmarks in the city. This tower used to be built in the thirteenth century by the Moors to defend the city. They used to have a pontoon bridge between this one and the neighbourhood on the other side of the river, which is today known as Triana https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triana,_Seville . This bridge was built to destroy the boats from the enemies.
El Torre de Oro used to be found at the Guadalquivir, but because of the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, it collapsed. So the tower we see today is actually a reconstruction of the Torre de Oro and is now standing near to the river.
What about the name
El Torre de Oro means the golden tower. It received his name because it used to be covered with yellow tiles and when the sun was shining, a golden glimmer arose over the river.
Museum
In 1944 they founded the Museo Naval de Sevilla. Nowadays this is still the function of the building. On the inside, you will find old navy equipment, cannons, models, maps and many more. It has been renovated in 2005 and today you can enter it for only three euros (on Mondays for free). This tower can be found nearby the golden tower. Unfortunately it is not so well maintained as the Torre de Oro. The entrance of this tower is situated via a corridor of the city wall. The Torre de Plato used to be linked by the city wall to the Torre de Oro.
It is a bit ashame that it is not so good kept up, but from the outside you can still see its beauty. Nowadays you can not visit this tower on the inside.
If you are standing in front of the Torre de Plata, you will see some remainings of the wall that connected the two towers to defend the city. It is really impressive and worth a detour for photography lovers.
During the 12th century, all the towers were connected with walls. There actually used to be 4 or 5 towers in the city to defend Sevilla. The others are the Torre Asis, Torre Alcázar and an unknown tower.
